Bi-weekly Updates:
November 2019
Math:
We’ve just finished our volume unit, where we learned the algorithm to calculate rectangular prisms and irregular shapes made out of rectangular prisms. Our new unit is fractions, where we compare, add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. We have also begun to try out some logic puzzles and high cognitive demand tasks.
Reading:
In reading we have finished our read aloud Holes. It was a great book filled with action and adventure. We had to name the chapters, since they were numbered, and answer questions from a packet we got at the beginning of the book. Some examples of chapters include: “Yes, Mr. Sir”, “The Warden” ''Filling in the Holes” and “If Only, If Only”.
We have also started our first reading groups! The theme is Survival and Resilience, and our books are Small as an Elephant, Hatchet, Out of my Mind, and Number the Stars.
Social Studies/Science:
In Social Studies, we have just finished our native american unit. We learned about different biomes and tribes, we also made an artifact or shelter. We just started our first science unit on animal adaptations and pond life, where we are learning about cause and effect and human impact.
Writing:
In writing, we are coming to a close in our narrative unit, where we wrote about a small moment that happened in our lives. Next we are starting our informational writing unit.
Specials:
PE:
In PE we just finished practicing for the Fun Run, running around the track and doing obstacles separately. But in recent gym classes we have been doing the two elements together. We are also starting our throwing and catching unit.
Art:
In art we have been working on art for our portfolios.
Music:
In music we have been learning how to read notes.
Chorus: In chorus, we have been learning songs such as Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, Mango Mango Ma-Ma-Ma-Mango, and Ah Poor Bird/ Hey, Ho.
Library:
In library we have been learning about plagiarism and copyright.
